UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT VOLODYMYR ZELENSKYY SAYING: “I would like to thank the European countries for the supplies. We must also achieve results in the joint production of air defense systems and missiles for them – this is absolutely essential for our whole Europe. Only time separates us from that result, and what matters most is shortening that time.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, June 7, called for “clear”, “positive signals” from the United States regarding air defense transfers, warning that delays in decision-making are costing Ukrainian lives amid escalating Russian missile attacks.
“We need concrete signals, not just words,” Zelenskyy said in a video address, emphasizing the urgency of faster support from international partners. His remarks came as Russia intensified strikes across Ukraine, including a recent attack on Kharkiv that killed civilians and damaged critical infrastructure.
– Persistent Calls for Air Defense Systems
Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged Western allies to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses, particularly with advanced systems like the U.S.-made Patriot batteries. On April 11, in his nightly address, he stated that Kyiv was ready to purchase additional systems to protect Ukrainian cities.
Earlier, on April 6, ahead of a key Ramstein-format meeting, Zelensky directed his defense and foreign ministers to intensify contacts with partners, especially the U.S., to secure more air defenses. “Two priorities are being coordinated: air defense, specifically Patriots, and deployment coordination—pushing for the closest possible decisions,” he said on Telegram.
– Patriot Systems Play Critical Role
The urgency for more air defenses was underscored after an April 8 missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, when Zelensky directly appealed to Washington for additional Patriot systems. The U.S.-supplied Patriots have been vital in intercepting advanced Russian missiles, including hypersonic Kinzhals.
